What Is Powder Coating

A Tough Finish Built for Real-World Use

Powder coating is an electrostatic finishing process. Dry powder is charged and applied to the part, then cured in an oven where it flows out and cross-links into a hard, continuous shell. The result is thicker and tougher than conventional wet paint, with no runs, sags, or solvent off-gassing. Because no solvents are involved, the finish is zero-VOC from start to finish.

Every part is cleaned and prepped before coating. That prep work is what makes the finish bond and hold up over time. From a single custom wheel to a production batch of fabricated parts, the process is the same. Advanced Coatings has been applying powder coating from our Redmond, Oregon facility since 2013, serving customers in Central Oregon, the greater Pacific Northwest, and across the US and Canada.

Surface Engineering

Powder Coating Built on Proper Prep

Powder cures into a continuous protective shell, but that shell only performs over a clean, properly profiled surface. We strip old coatings, remove rust and contaminants, blast the right anchor profile, then apply and cure to spec, so the finish resists chips, corrosion, and peeling on wheels, fabricated parts, railings, and equipment.

Powder Coating Questions

Do you strip old paint or powder before recoating?
Yes. All parts go through our full prep process before any powder is applied. That includes stripping existing coatings, cleaning, and surface preparation for adhesion. See our process page for a full walkthrough.
Can you match a specific color or use a custom color?
We have access to hundreds of stock powder colors across all sheens. If you have a specific color code or sample, we can work to find the closest match or source a custom powder for your project.
How does powder coating hold up compared to wet paint?
Powder coating is generally thicker and more impact-resistant than liquid paint. Because there are no solvents, the finish does not shrink or crack as it cures. It also resists chipping, scratching, and UV fading better than most spray-applied paints.
Can you coat large parts or handle production volume?
We work on a wide range of part sizes and production volumes. If you have a large batch or an ongoing production need, contact us with the details and we will quote accordingly.

Do you serve customers in Bend, Sisters, Prineville, or other Central Oregon towns?
Yes. Our facility is in Redmond, Oregon, and we regularly work with customers throughout Central Oregon including Bend, Sisters, Prineville, La Pine, and surrounding areas. We also ship finished parts across the US and Canada for customers who cannot drop off in person.
What is the difference between powder coating and Cerakote?
Both are oven-cured, hard-surface finishes, but they serve different purposes. Powder coating applies a thicker film and is well suited to larger structural parts, automotive wheels, gates, and architectural metalwork. Cerakote is a thinner, polymer-ceramic coating engineered for tight-tolerance parts like firearm components, precision hardware, and aerospace components. We offer both and can recommend the right process for your application.
Is powder coating suitable for outdoor or high-corrosion environments?
Powder coating provides solid corrosion protection for outdoor use, and its UV-stable formulations resist fading season after season. For parts that face extreme chemical exposure or corrosive environments, we can discuss which powder type or surface pretreatment is best suited.
